A hate crime is an act of violence, aggression or discrimination committed against you because of your disability, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other perceived difference. It is not only related to physical violence. Someone using offensive language towards you or harassing you because of who you are, or who they think you are, is also a crime. The same goes for someone posting abusive or offensive messages about you online. Hate Crime also includes things like name calling, spitting, damage to property, graffiti, and written notes, emails and text messages.

If you experience hate crime and witness it, been attacked, harm or hurt. REPORT IT. Hate crime can be reported by a third party, tell someone, friend, teacher, organisation, contact your local police by phoning 101.

Reporting Hate Crime

Thames Valley Police state they will support the needs of victims, their families and their communities to make them safer and prevent re-victimisation. If you choose to report a hate crime to the police or services, it can be investigated which can stop it from getting worse – either for you or someone else.

GALOP are the LGBT+ anti-violence charity. Offering support if you’ve experienced hate crime, sexual violence or domestic abuse. They also support lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer people who have had problems with the police or have questions about the criminal justice system.
